Chevy 283 engine
According to our records engine casting number 3737739 shows a 283 engine block used in 1958 passenger cars and Corvette models. It may have been used in some very early 1959 models also.
To find out if it was originally in a Corvette there is another set of numbers on the passenger side deck of the block directly in front of the passenger cylinder head. Email us these numbers which will tell you/us which car this block was originally installed in.
I checked the Engine serial number and suffix for the Chevy 283 engine 3737739. The stamp is F614FC. Now the C is really closed so it could be a G at the end. However, I am doubtful that this is a Corvette engine, but I need to know what year this engine is and if it is a Corvette engine.
Thank you, Wildguy........
The casting number is 1958. See if the block has three holes
on each side where side motor mounts would go, if so it is
a 1958. The F614FC is curious because the F=Flint engine
plant, 6=june, 14=day of month, but the FC is a 1957 suffix
for powerglide trans with 4 barrel carb. In 1958 the FC suffix
was used on 348 engines. The motor may be an early 1958 283
used at the end of the 1957 run.
I have a 1957 Bel Air 283 with a F6IIFC block stamp, could it be the same as the above posting…Flint June 11 4 bbl with powerglide? However the serial numbers reflect a poduction date of May 1957 at the Oakland, CA plant.
I have a GM engine with the numbers 3834810…I would like to know if anyone can tell me car or cars this motor was in..Thank you
I have an early 283 casting # 3737739 FI204E. Can anyone identify what car it's from?
3737739 casting number is a 283 from either a 1958–9 Corvette or a 1958–61 passenger car.

I'm trying to figuire out what engine I have.
I have what I think is a 1958 283ci engine. The casting number on the rear of the engine is 3737739.
In addition, on the tab in front of the passenger side head reads: T725D.
There are three holes on each side where motor mounts would bolt to.
Can you provide insight to what I have?
Thank you.
3737739 1957–64 283 170–290 hp 2 bl
Also the casting number was used for 220–290hp Corvette's
In addition to the casting number for the block, there is also a casting number for the month, day and year. Example 3737739 and H277 equals GM 283 with a casting date of August 27, 1957

I have a Chevy 283 engine in my 1956 Chevy Bel Air. Casting #'s are 3737739. The previous owner thought the engine could be a Corvette engine but he did not know? Mortec shows it to be a 1959–1962 and other places have the engine a 1957–1959. I would like to know the exact year of this engine.
Thanks, Wild guy.......
