Installing Seat stops

I am putting in the seat stops in a ‚56 chevy. Should I put the stop on top of the leather on the front bottom bench (screwing through the leather) or should i put the stop under the leather (so it touches the metal frame so i don‘t have to screw through the leather)?

Tracie, The 1956 seat stops install over the top of the vinyl, just like they were when new.
